Getting your Paperwork in Order Before a Divorce is Filed

If you are  facing a possible divorce, you are probably wondering what documents you will need. While each set of circumstances will require different things at different times, if you wish to be pro-active and start to gather paperwork which might be needed later - then at a minimum you should start making copies of:

* Bank Statements
* Pay Stubs
* Retirement Plan Statements
* Car Titles
* 2-3 years of most recent tax returns & schedules including W2's.
* Recent mortgage statement if you own a house
* Bills
* Credit Card Statements

If you still live with your husband or wife, you might want to keep copies of this outside of the home in case things get ugly and your spouse wants to withhold information. After you make copies, you can throw it into an envelope to keep at work, in a locked glove compartment, or with a friend. Better yet, if you have a lawyer, give the documents to your attorney for safekeeping and to avoid delays down the road.
Its never to early to be prepared.

Consulting with a lawyer is also smart. Even if you end up working things out, at least you will know what kinds of things you should be thinking about, just in case.  Call us for a consultation at O'Connor Cadiz Law to speak with a compassionate divorce lawyer about your options. We are located in Schaumburg and Itasca.
