When I bought a condo, I hired an inspector. While hiring a home inspector is optional when you are buying a home, I believe that it is always a good idea to have one, regardless of the size or style of the home. Its true that if you are buying a condo, the exterior (example: roof) is for the most part controlled by the condo association and not the owner of the unit. However, you will still want to have the unit inspected for defects that may not be visible at first glance. For example, are there any problems with the plumbing or appliances? You also want to make sure that the electrical is safe & in good working order, as well as the heating, cooling and other systems. It is not at all uncommon to have a condo professionally inspected before you buy it.
